What do I do when the backing tape isn't enough? - TSS #37

Welcome to Hitlights’ Trouble Shooting Series, where we tackle the most common questions and concerns you might have about LED Strip Lights.

Today’s Topic: Do I need a mounting alternative?

While the standard backing tape for our Strip Lights is usuallymore than sufficient, especially demanding projects may need another mounting option.

1. Will the backing tape always be effective?

While every situation is different there are a few demanding applications where the backing tape may not hold up to the level you need it. We recommend using the included tape on surfaces that are smooth, dry and clean.

2. When should I consider a mounting upgrade?

Outdoor locations that are exposed to the elements like wind and rain are some of the most demanding applications. Also, wetter environments like bathrooms and some kitchens are tough. Sometimes issues arise when installing the strips upside down, like in an under cabinet installation. Finally, uneven surfaces like untreated woods or tile can be just enough to weaken the backing tape, a perfect opportunity to reach for some foam tape...

3. What are my upgrade options?

For wetter situations, like outdoors or in bathrooms, mounting clips are a great alternative. With no adhesive to be dissolved, mounting clips won't fail just because things get a little wet! Just remember to make sure your strips can handle the water too!

For more uneven surfaces, or places where you just need a stronger grip, foam tape is a solid choice. Think of foam tape as upgraded backing, as it follows the same guidelines for installation as the backing tape. Other options are silicone caulk or hot glue, both of which are a little trickier to use, but offer exceptionally strong bonds.
