Battery-Powered vs Hardwired LED Lighting
Table of Content

Every event exhibitor and display designer faces the same power question: hardwire to the venue electrical system, or go battery-powered? The answer depends on factors that aren't always obvious until you've done a few shows. Here's the complete breakdown.

The Core Tradeoff

Hardwired lighting offers unlimited runtime at full brightness with no battery management. Battery-powered lighting offers complete venue independence, no electrical drop fees, and full portability. Neither is universally better — the right choice depends on your specific show circumstances.

When to Choose Hardwired LED Lighting

Hardwired is the better choice when:

  • You exhibit at the same venue repeatedly and have an established electrical drop setup
  • Your show runs for more than two days and you want to avoid battery charging logistics
  • Your lighting load is above 100 watts (large booth, multiple zones) — battery systems become heavy and expensive at higher loads
  • The venue requires hardwired electrical for all displays (some convention centers do)
  • You need precise dimming control throughout the show day

What hardwired requires:

  • Advance booking of an electrical drop from the venue (typically ordered on the exhibitor kit form)
  • A UL Listed power supply or driver mounted in your booth structure
  • Basic wiring from the floor drop to your LED power supply
  • A qualified electrician for the connection in venues that require it (many do)

Cost: Electrical drops typically run $75–$350 per show depending on the venue, location on the show floor, and amperage required. Annual exhibitors often find this cost predictable and manageable.

When to Choose Battery-Powered LED Lighting

Battery is the better choice when:

  • You exhibit at different venues and venue-to-venue power access is inconsistent
  • You do outdoor shows, tent events, or pop-up markets where electrical access is limited or unreliable
  • Your total lighting load is under 60–80 watts (single zone, moderate brightness)
  • You want to eliminate per-show electrical drop costs
  • Setup time is tight and you want lights operational immediately without waiting for an electrical connection
  • You're testing a new booth design and want maximum flexibility

What battery-powered requires:

  • 12V rechargeable battery pack (lithium-ion or sealed lead acid)
  • 12V LED strips (not 24V — standard lithium packs output 12V nominal)
  • Charging time between show days (8–12 hours for most lithium packs)
  • A backup charged battery for multi-day shows

Battery Runtime Calculations

The key calculation for battery-powered shows:

Runtime (hours) = Battery capacity (Ah) × Voltage ÷ Load (W)

Example: A 20Ah 12V lithium battery running a 30-watt LED strip load:

Runtime = 20Ah × 12V ÷ 30W = 8 hours

A full 8-hour show day on a single charge. Bring a second battery for multi-day shows.

For a 60-watt load: Runtime = 20Ah × 12V ÷ 60W = 4 hours. Either use a larger battery (40Ah) or plan to swap the battery at midday.

Battery Type Comparison

Battery Type Weight Runtime Cycles Best For
Lithium-Ion (12V) Light Longest per pound 500–800 Frequent exhibitors, portable setups
LiFePO4 (12V) Light–Moderate Long 2000+ High-cycle use, long-term investment
Sealed Lead Acid (12V) Heavy Moderate 200–400 Budget installations, occasional use

LED Strip Selection for Battery-Powered Shows

For battery-powered event lighting, use 12V LED strips — standard 12V rechargeable batteries output 12–13.8V nominal, which is fully compatible with 12V LED strips.

Keep the wattage per foot on the lower end (1.5–2.5 W/ft) to maximize runtime per charge. High-density strips at 4+ W/ft will drain batteries significantly faster.

For color options, our RGB and RGBW strip lights work well for battery-powered show setups and allow color to match your brand.

The Hybrid Approach

Many experienced exhibitors run a hybrid setup: hardwired for product display (where consistent, bright, high-CRI light matters) and battery-powered for accent or brand color elements (where portability and flexibility matter more). This approach provides reliability for the most important lighting while keeping backup options if electrical access is limited.

Trade Show Lighting Kit for Either Approach

Whether hardwired or battery, the rest of the kit is the same:

  • LED strips mounted in aluminum channels with frosted diffusers
  • Solderless connectors for fast assembly and disassembly
  • Pre-cut cable lengths with labeled connectors for consistent setup
  • Spare connectors and a short test strip for field diagnosis
