The difference between a professional LED strip installation and a DIY one usually comes down to one thing: aluminum channel. Bare strip tape on a surface looks like a retrofit. Strip in a channel with a frosted diffuser looks designed. Here's how to do it right.

Why Aluminum Channels Matter

Aluminum channels do three things that bare strip tape cannot:

  • Heat dissipation: The aluminum body conducts heat away from the LED chips. Heat is the primary cause of early LED failure. Channels extend strip lifespan significantly on high-density and COB strips that run warm.
  • Clean appearance: The frosted diffuser lens eliminates visible LED hotspots and creates a smooth, continuous light line. No visible dots, no copper substrate, no adhesive tape showing.
  • Protection: The channel protects the strip from dust, accidental contact, and incidental moisture. On installations that get touched (stair nosings, display cases), the channel is the only thing standing between the strip and damage.

Tools Required

  • Measuring tape
  • Metal hacksaw, miter saw with metal blade, or tin snips (for cutting channels)
  • Drill with small bit (for mounting screws)
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Utility knife or scissors (for cutting diffuser lenses)

Step 1: Measure and Plan the Run

Measure the total linear footage of the installation. Identify where each channel section ends — these are your cut points for both the channel and the strip. Map out where the power supply will be located and plan the wire routing from the supply to the first strip section.

For under-cabinet or cove installations, identify any gaps (above the stove, above the sink) where the channel will be interrupted. Each continuous section is a separate channel run.

Step 2: Cut the Channels to Length

Cut each aluminum channel to the correct length using a metal hacksaw or a miter saw with a non-ferrous metal blade. The cut face doesn't need to be finished — it will be covered by the end cap. Keep cuts square (90°) so end caps seat flush.

For channels that need to make 90° corners (inside corners in cove installations), cut the channel at 45° to create a clean miter joint. Corner channel profiles are also available and eliminate the need for mitering.

Step 3: Mount the Channels

Surface-mount channels use small mounting clips that attach to the surface first; the channel then snaps into the clips.

  1. Mark clip positions at 12–18 inch intervals along the channel line
  2. Pre-drill pilot holes at each clip position to avoid splitting wood surfaces
  3. Screw the clips in place
  4. Snap the channel body into the clips — it should click firmly into place

For recessed channels, rout a groove in the mounting surface to the channel's depth before mounting. The channel sits flush with or below the surface plane.

Step 4: Cut and Prepare the LED Strip

Cut the LED strip to the correct length at a designated cut point (marked with a scissor icon and visible copper pads). Never cut between cut points — this breaks the circuit.

If the strip has a paper backing over the adhesive, peel it back a few inches at each end but leave the middle covered until you're ready to set the strip in the channel. Pre-exposing all the adhesive makes positioning difficult.

Step 5: Install the Strip in the Channel

  1. Place one end of the strip at the start of the channel, adhesive side down
  2. Slowly peel the backing and press the strip firmly into the channel as you go
  3. The strip should sit centered in the channel without touching the side walls
  4. Press firmly along the entire length to ensure good adhesive contact

For COB strips or wide high-density strips, verify the strip width matches the channel's internal width before ordering. A strip that's too wide won't seat correctly.

Step 6: Connect the Wiring

Run wire leads from the channel to your power supply location. Use 18 AWG wire for runs under 10 feet, 16 AWG for longer power leads.

Connect the wire leads to the strip using solderless connectors (snap-clip type for most standard strips) or by soldering directly to the copper pads. For professional installations, soldered connections are more reliable for anything that will be enclosed in a finished surface.

Route wires neatly — through holes drilled in cabinet bottoms, along the channel back using adhesive wire clips, or inside the channel end cap if space allows. For complete wiring guidance, see our guide on how to connect LED strip lights.

Step 7: Test Before Closing Up

Before installing the diffuser lens or closing any finished surfaces, connect power and verify:

  • Full illumination along the entire strip length
  • No visible dim sections or color variation (sign of voltage drop or poor connection)
  • Dimmer response if dimmable installation
  • All zones operating correctly

Fix any issues now. After the diffuser is on and the installation is closed, accessing connections requires disassembly.

Step 8: Install the Diffuser Lens and End Caps

Snap the frosted diffuser lens into the channel from one end, sliding it in until it seats fully. Trim excess at the end with a utility knife if needed. Press end caps onto both ends of each channel section to close the openings.

Step back and view the installation from normal standing position. The LED source should not be visible. Only the diffused glow should be apparent through the lens.
